Life is a quest,
We are here to gain knowledge,
Reflecting in the light,
Filled in the grant of satisfaction.
Make my life one worth noting.
We are here leave a mark on this earth
Before we leave it behind.
We are here on these Roman roads to find,
To discover and seek the ancient wonders.
It is during our travels,
We are to the experience;
Seeking all solace in nature,
And in humankind; finding just in all;
Enlightenment in the flash of lightning,
Our reflection in the rain,
And illumination from the moon.
This is just my reflection,
I wanted to share with you.
Vézelay is a major site of Christendom and an incredible hilltop village. The climb to the basilica is almost a rite of passage. Over the centuries many have found inspiration here. Spiritual, literary or poetic – the essence of Romanesque art.
The Vézelay Abbey foundation was started in the 9th century when the Benedictine abbey of Vézelay acquired the relics of St Mary Magdalene and since then it has been an important historical landmark and the beginning of the Templars crusades.
In the 12th century Bernard of Clairvaux preached the Second Crusade in Vézelay. The village harbours the relics of Mary-Magdalene and became a major spiritual centre on the Santiago de Compostella pilgrim way.
At its height Vézelay had a population of nearly 10,000 people, including pilgrims from all over Europe. Its cellars, with their tall pillars, provided shelter for more people than the houses could hold!
