The elephant is revered in Sri Lanka because it was one of their elephants who reverently carried “Buddha” the prophet, to his final resting place. The significance is that these elephants are the ancestors of that elephants who carried him.
Pinawalla Elephant Orphanage- Sri Lanka
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka.
It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka wildlife department in a 25 acre coconut property near the Maha Oya river.
The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungle. As of 2003, there were 65 elephants.
Today there are 130.
